How to Keep Your Debit Card Safe: Simple Tips for Smarter, More Secure Spending

Written by Osgood Bank | April 13, 2026

Your new Osgood Bank debit card is designed to do more than just make purchases - it helps you spend smarter and stay safer, especially as fraud tactics continue to evolve.

That's why we've rolled out debit cards backed by Mastercard®’s  security enhancements. You'll also get access to powerful tools in our mobile app that let you take control of your card in real time.

Whether you're shopping in-store, online, or on the go, here are some easy ways to protect your card - and get more out of it.

1. Use the New Card - and Only the New One

If you received your new card in the mail recently, be sure to activate it right away using the instructions on the front sticker. Once your new card is active, your old card will be deactivated.

Regardless of whether you activate your new card or not, your old card will be automatically deactivated on June 15, 2026.

Using only the updated card helps protect your account and ensures you're taking advantage of the latest security features.

2. Feel Safer with Mastercard®'s Built-In Security

Every new debit card includes enhanced security from Mastercard®, including

  • Stronger chip technology

  • Improved fraud detection tools
  • Encrypted, secure transactions

It's all part of Mastercard's plan to help customers like you, and the entire payment system.

3. Try Card Controls - They're a Game Changer

Have you ever wished you could "turn off" your debit card temporarily? Now ou can.

With Card Controls in the Osgood Bank mobile app, you can:

  • Instantly freeze or unfreeze your card

  • Set spending limits
  • Choose where your card can be used
  • Get real-time alerts for every swipe, tap, or online charge

Card controls are great for peace of mind - especially during travel, the holidays, or when managing a teen's account.

Please note: Parents can add their kids' cards to card controls, but a card can only be added to one online banking profile.

4. Tap to Pay When You Can

Your new card supports contactless payments, which are quick, secure, and reduce your physical contact at checkout.

Just look for the contactless symbol (similar to a sideways Wi-Fi icon) and tap your card to pay. It's easy - and safer than swiping.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Account

Get into the habit of checking your account activity regularly using online banking or the Osgood Bank mobile app. If something doesn't look right, freeze your card immediately using Card Controls and give us a call.

Don't forget: Old cards Deactivate June 15
