The Osgood Foundation helps fund a book room at Marion Local Elementary School. Read on to learn what a book room is and how the donation contributes to a vital part of a student's education process.

What is a "Book Room"?

A book room is a shared space for books in a school. Meant to complement a library, book rooms provide teachers with a variety of books to supplement the core curriculum.

"Book rooms are a practical, economical, and effective solution to making sure every teacher has the volume of books she needs to support her students in learning the instructional strategies identified in her curriculum. Books for whole class and small group instruction are organized in grab-and-go baskets for a teacher to simply (and quickly) take and incorporate into her classroom" (Mulligan & Landrigan, 2022).

Supporting Reading Development

Hope Rethman is a first-grade teacher at Marion Local Elementary. She and her colleagues have a vision of creating a book room at their school and began fundraising to purchase engaging, age-appropriate books for various reading levels to stock their new book room. "These books would be shared amongst the teachers to help provide the right books, at the right levels, to target key skills for small, group-guided reading instruction. For this shared book room to be successful, we will need to purchase multiple copies of quality leveled books so that we can differentiate the instruction based on each child's individual needs and abilities," Ms. Rethman stated, "I am very passionate about making this book room a reality."

Osgood Bank is committed to providing aid in the education of youth in our communities through partnerships with the schools. In support of the book room, the Osgood Foundation made a financial contribution that will allow Ms. Rethman and her colleagues the opportunity to grow their vision and provide additional resources to the children at Marion Local Elementary.

Foundation donation ML book employee 2022Recently, Osgood Bank employees visited the book room where they encouraged the children to read and enjoy the space. It was fantastic to see the children's faces light up when they realized that people from the community came to visit, see their books, and the space where they can read. It was confirmation that our Foundation donation is at work in their smiles. We support our youth and want them to have the best opportunities to learn and grow into successful citizens of our community.

Osgood Bank is blessed to be a part of returning good back to our communities by lifting others.
